Where in the Woden Valley is the practice?+
Our rooms are at Unit 11/12, Level 1, 48 Corinna Street, Phillip — a few minutes' walk from Westfield Woden and the Woden bus interchange, so patients coming by bus can get here without a transfer. By car it is about a minute from Phillip, three from Lyons, four from Garran, five from Chifley and Hughes, six from Curtin and O'Malley, and eight from Mawson and Weston Creek.
Which Woden Valley suburbs do your patients come from?+
Across the whole valley — Phillip, Lyons, Chifley, Curtin, Garran, Hughes, O'Malley, Mawson, Farrer, Torrens, Pearce and Isaacs — as well as Weston Creek and the Tuggeranong side. Because the practice sits in the town centre, most of the Woden Valley is inside a ten minute drive.
What is the difference between a specialist orthodontist and a dentist who offers braces?+
Any registered dentist can legally provide braces or aligners. A specialist orthodontist has completed three additional years of full-time postgraduate training in orthodontics after their dental degree; around 600 practise in Australia. Dr Thomas Ethell is an Australian Orthodontic Board–certified specialist and plans and leads every case in the practice personally, with the support of the clinical team.
Are retainers and appliances made on site?+
Yes. Retainers, plates and appliances are made in our own lab at the Phillip rooms rather than sent to an external facility. In practice that usually means a shorter turnaround when a retainer needs replacing or an appliance needs adjusting.
What happens at a first consultation?+
A new patient appointment runs about an hour and includes photographs and x-rays, an examination, and a walk-through of the treatment options open to you. You leave with a written plan and a fixed quote, and there is no obligation to proceed. You can book directly without a referral; if your dentist has referred you, bring any records or x-rays they have provided.
