Biography

Dr Thomas Ethell examining a teen patient in the Phillip operatory

Dr Thomas Ethell is the principal specialist orthodontist at Orthodontics Canberra. He holds a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics in addition to his foundation dental qualifications, and is an Australian Orthodontic Board–certified specialist orthodontist. In 2023 he received the Australian Society of Orthodontists award for best treated case.

Tom treats patients from age seven through to their seventies, and enjoys the variety that comes with caring for patients at every stage of life. He has a particular interest in early orthodontic assessment, recommending children be seen around age seven to identify those who may benefit from guided jaw growth or interceptive treatment. For these children, early intervention can simplify — or even avoid — the need for more extensive treatment during the teenage years.

While many of his patients are children and teenagers, Tom also manages a large number of adult cases, including complex bite corrections, cosmetic finishing, and comprehensive full-arch treatment. He provides both fixed braces and clear aligners, selecting the appliance that best suits each patient's goals rather than favouring one approach over another.

He is a member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, the Australian Dental Association, and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He attends specialist clinical meetings regularly and contributes to mentoring junior dentists in their early years of orthodontic exposure.

Tom leads the orthodontic care at Orthodontics Canberra and is involved in every patient's diagnosis and treatment plan, working alongside the wider clinical team.
